Holding hands is a simple and beautiful gesture, but one that is the most difficult for gay people. Holding hands becomes a political statement in Ireland, due to oppressive atmosphere created by intolerance and years of oppression.

 

For us we find it hard to express ourselves especially as the first openly gay couple in a small town in rural Ireland.

Publicly we are constantly aware of our behavior, which for most people is a natural instinct or unconscious act of care and affection. Privately we are safe in our home environment without comment or judgment.

Our Private and public space experiences are two completely different worlds.
